TECHNOLOGY WORKSHEET

Data Usage Calculator

Build a rough internet or mobile-data estimate from the activities you choose, then compare it with an optional monthly allowance.

Build your usage estimate

Enter hours per active day and days per week for only the activities you use. Leave the others blank.

CUSTOM ACTIVITY

Add your own data rate

Use a measured or estimated MB/hour or GB/hour rate if a preset does not fit. You can add up to five custom activities.

FILE DOWNLOADS / FIXED USAGE

Add monthly downloads

Include a game download, software update, or other fixed transfer here instead of treating it as hourly activity.

OPTIONAL PLAN COMPARISON

Compare a monthly allowance

This estimates data remaining or over the allowance; it does not estimate fees or provider policy.

Enter an activity schedule, monthly downloads, or a plan allowance to build an estimate.

How the 30-day estimate works

For an hourly activity, weekly use equals rate × hours per active day × days per week. Divide by seven for the average calendar day, then multiply by 30 for a 30-day month. A 1 GB/hour activity used for two hours on three days each week is 6 GB/week and about 25.71 GB per 30-day month. Fixed monthly downloads add directly to the monthly total and are averaged across 30 days for day and week results.

All calculator units are decimal: 1 GB = 1,000 MB and 1 TB = 1,000 GB. One 30-day month is used for estimates.

Approximate rates used here

These are generic assumptions, not service guarantees. Video quality and automatic adjustment can move usage substantially. Online gaming reflects gameplay data, while game downloads and updates belong in the fixed-download input.

Rounded generic data-rate assumptions used by the calculator
ActivityApproximate data useNotes
Low quality video300 MB/hourA lower-quality mobile-like estimate
SD video700 MB/hourA generic standard-definition estimate
HD video1,500 MB/hourBetween lower mobile and higher fixed-line examples
Full HD / 1080p video2,500 MB/hourA higher-definition planning estimate
4K video6,000 MB/hourRounded from multi-GB 4K examples
Low quality audio30 MB/hourLower-bitrate example
Standard quality audio60 MB/hourModerate-bitrate example
High quality audio150 MB/hourHigher-bitrate example
Video calling500 MB/hourVideo quality and participant count vary
Social media / web browsing100 MB/hourMixed pages, images, and short clips vary widely
Online gaming (play only)60 MB/hourExcludes downloads, patches, and cloud gaming

These rounded generic planning rates draw on public examples from AT&T’s internet data calculator, AT&T’s mobile data guidance, and Verizon’s household data calculator. Those references differ, sometimes substantially. Quality, compression, autoplay, device, service, and content can change actual data transferred.

Worked hypothetical example

The example button enters HD video for two hours on five days per week, standard audio for one hour every day, and online gaming for one hour on four days per week. With the rates above, that is about 64.29 GB of HD video, 1.80 GB of audio, and 1.03 GB of gaming per 30 days, or about 67.11 GB total. Against a hypothetical 100 GB allowance, about 32.89 GB remains.

What the estimate leaves out

Autoplay, adaptive quality, ads, cloud backups, operating-system updates, downloads, other household devices, and background traffic can all change usage. A speed such as 100 Mbps describes transfer capacity, not a fixed monthly amount consumed. This worksheet is educational and does not predict a provider bill.
