What this converter does
This converter translates internet speed units such as Mbps, Gbps, KB/s, MB/s, and GB/s. It helps compare internet plans, speed test results, browser download speeds, and transfer rates.
Inputs and results
Speed is the number you want to convert. Convert from is the current speed unit. Convert to is the target speed unit. The result shows the equivalent speed in the selected unit.
Lowercase b means bits. Uppercase B means bytes. Internet plans are usually sold in Mbps or Gbps, while download tools often show MB/s.
How the conversion works
The converter first converts the input to bits per second, then converts that value to the target unit. Because 1 byte equals 8 bits, 100 Mbps equals 12.5 MB/s.
Worked example
A 1 Gbps connection equals 1,000 Mbps or about 125 MB/s in ideal conditions. If a download app shows 50 MB/s, that is about 400 Mbps of transfer speed.
Tips for interpreting results
Converted speed is not a promise of real-world performance. Wi-Fi quality, router limits, server capacity, network congestion, VPNs, and device performance can reduce actual transfers.
Frequently asked questions
How many bits are in a byte?
There are eight bits in one byte.
Why does a 100 Mbps plan show 12.5 MB/s?
The advertised number is usually megabits per second. Divide by eight to get megabytes per second.
Is Mbps the same as MB/s?
No. Mbps means megabits per second, while MB/s means megabytes per second. 1 MB/s equals 8 Mbps.
Why is my speed test different from my download speed?
Speed tests and downloads may use different servers, routes, devices, and network conditions.
